Halloween Recap: Flying Bats and Costume Fun

Group of Scouts Standing with a Chipmunk

Chipmunks, Michael Jackson, and Super Mario, oh my!

With Halloween just around the corner, we decided to crank up the fun and combine this spooktacular holiday with a joint pack night! The moment the Cub Scouts burst through the doors, giggles and shrieks of excitement filled the air as they dashed over to show off their wild costumes to their den mates.

Everyone had to leap up for a high five with their den chief—who was hilariously disguised as a gigantic squirrel! Picture a giant squirrel leading the Pledge of Allegiance—now that’s a memory for the scrapbooks. One of our intrepid Webelos helped display the Scout Oath during opening ceremonies. We kicked things off with a quick safety moment: how to accept candy safely, toss out any unwrapped goodies, and let parents help inspect the night’s sweet loot after trick-or-treating.

As the sun began to dip, we gathered our pack together for some adorable group photos—costumes and all! Our amazing new Den Leader, Jen, rallied everyone from Lions to AOL at the table for a hands-on STEM adventure. We dove into the science behind our flying bat project: learning about gravity, drag, thrust, and aerodynamics as our bats soared and swooped through the air. With just a few simple materials—straws as launchers, yarn for tails, and plenty of tape and markers—the kids became engineers, artists, and scientists all at once. There was measuring, building, testing, and a whole lot of giggling as bats zoomed across the room. Even our Den Chief joined the fun! Big thanks to our ever-helpful unit commissioner Brandy for lending a hand and cheering everyone on. A special thanks to Martin for donating the popcorn! Next up: molding clay! The creativity soared as every scout crafted their own Frankenstein creation, from perfectly sculpted pumpkins to a delightfully lumpy orange. Thanks to Jen’s crafty magic, each air-dry clay work of art became a creative keepsake keychain—a tiny Halloween treasure to remember the night.

The costume creativity was frightfully fun—our very own Michael Jackson even treated us to a spooktacular moonwalk! Some of our parents dared to join the costume parade in their own silly getups. We wrapped up the evening with a “boo-licious” potluck of ghoulishly good treats—spider hot dog rolls, lollipop spiders, and more.
