We encourage everyone to take advantage of the training’s we offer throughout the year. In-person training is the best option to connect with other leaders and get personal guidance, all our in-person trainings are listed below.

Basic Leader Training Requirements

Need to know what are the requirements to be trained for your unit leadership role? This sheet explains the training requirements for all unit-level leaders. Once you are fully trained you can wear the Trained patch on your uniform.

Cub Scout Leader Specific:

Cub Scout Leader Specific provides Cubmasters, Den Leaders, and Committee Members with the basic information and tools they need to lead successful Cub Scout Packs.

BALOO ( Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation)

BALOO is a 2 day training course that teaches leaders skills needed to carry out a Pack successful family/Den campout. BALOO training is required for at least one adult leader of a Pack to do overnight camping as a part of the Pack’s activities.

Scoutmaster & ASM Training:

The course will provide Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters with the basic information and tools they need to lead successful troops.

The course will provide Troop Committee Chairs and Committee members with the basic information and tools they need to lead successful troops.

Outdoor Leader Skills (OLS)

This course will provide you with the basic outdoor skills needed to start and guide a program right. The emphasis is on how to teach the outdoor skills found in the Scout BSA Handbook. This course is typically taken after Scout BSA Leader Specifics.

Venturing Training:

Basic Scout Leader Training in Chinese (中文):

These courses will closely follow the BSA training guidelines and materials for new leaders. However, to ensure the targeted participants fully understand the Scouting Principles and Skills, the courses will be conducted in Chinese (中文). All adult leaders and parents are encouraged to participate in these Basic Training Courses.


Rangemaster Training

This course provides the basics of Archery and BB Gun instruction, range operations, and shooting skills so you can run an effective Archery or BB Gun program for Cub Scouts and Webelos. Graduates of this course will be qualified as Archery, BB Gun, Sling Shot Range Masters and may run a Range at a Cub Camp or other Council event if accompanied by at least one additional adult age 21 or over.

This course is intended for adults wishing to be a range master at a council or district event or cub camp.  Shooting sports are not an approved activity at the den or pack level.

Den Chief Training:

This course is for Boy Scouts who have been approved by their Scoutmaster to serve as a den chief. They need to be 12 years or older, and ideally should be 1st class rank or higher.

An interactive course to teach basic first aid and CPR with AED. Designed for Scoutmasters, ASM’s and scouters. Minimum is 14 years of age. For Boy Scouts with rank of First Class, first aid merit badge, and scoutmaster approval. For Venturers active in a crew.

A course booklet will be provided the first day of class upon request. After successful completion of this course, you will be mailed an ASHI CPR with AED and First Aid card good for two years from the date of course. Scholarships are available.

Wilderness First Aid

This course is to prepare you for the expected with this fun, hands-on introduction to wilderness medicine. If you enjoy taking short trips relatively close to medical resources, work at wilderness camps, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities, or recreate outdoors, this course is for you.

Wood Badge

The objective of a Wood Badge course is to demonstrate as practically as possible the aims and methods of Scouting. Six days (two weekends) in duration, the course is a multi-faceted presentation of leadership skills, organizational tools, and participatory activities based on the best of Scouting traditions and the latest of team-development theory. In addition, participants will enjoy the fellowship of learning alongside many other volunteer and along the way will have a great deal of fun.

Training Patch Program

Earning the “Trained” patch shows that you are trained for your scouting position, but many of you devote your time to get additional training. Some required. For example, if you want to take your pack on an outdoor outing you need Baloo or taking a troop or crew on white water rafting, you need Safety afloat. We’ve developed the SVMBC training patch program so that you can display your commitment to training and to help us promote the many course that the SVMBC training teams puts on as well as additional online courses.

The training patch consists of a 3-inch round patch that can be purchased for $ 3. For each course you complete, you will receive a rocker at no charge that goes around the training patch. If you’ve completed a course in the past, you can can now order rockers at $1 each. For those of you interested in picking up a patch or to get past course rockers, they will be available online, mail order, at the Julian Front Desk during normal business, selecting training events and at major council events like University of Scouting and Scout-o-rama.
