NEW PROGRAMS AT CAMP PICO BLANCO

Enhancements, expansion, and new programs are being introduced at Camp Pico Blanco in Big Sur:
  • Welding and Metal Sculpture
  • Wood Carving
  • Painting and Sketching Art
  • Cinematography and Photography
  • Astronomy
  • STEM Nova programs on conservation, sustainability, plant science, fish and aquatic systems, earth science, and wildlife – These are new national pilot programs with those involved developing the curriculum and subject matter.  A greatly expanded program in conservation, conservation projects, protecting sensitive wildlife and habitats, etc. is being launched in May and will become a focal point of Camp Pico Blanco.  (Those interested in serving on the Council Conservation Committee should email their qualifications and interest to:  Support@svmbc.org)

As part of these expanded offerings and new curriculum, the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council is seeking subject matter specialists who are interested in helping boys, mostly between 11-16 but some as young as 8 and some as old as 18, develop their skills and knowledge.  The camp season at Pico Blanco begins with staff week on June 30 and continues for three weeks of “Boy Scout” camp and one session of “Cub Scout” resident camp, concluding on or about August 1.  There is also an early session at Camp Chesebrough, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

A variety of ways in which a subject matter specialist can participate will be considered:

  • Staff one or more weeks, typically Sunday to Saturday, and receive a stipend (as much as $100 per day plus food and tent housing)
  • Visit for a day or two and share your knowledge – we provide supplies, tent housing, and food.  One example would be artists from Monterey Bay might gather in Carmel on a Tuesday morning, carpool into camp, instruct Scouts in the morning, present general information to the camp at noon, set up easels in the afternoon for open painting, sketching, etc. and then return home at the conclusion or after dinner in camp.

Those interested or with questions should contact:  Support@svmbc.org.

Camp Pico Blanco is located in Big Sur, at the entrance to the Ventana Wilderness, deep in the forest at the end of the Palo Colorado Road.  The camp is situated along the Little Sur River and is blessed with an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty.  Those participating in the programs will be interviewed, references checked, and will pass a criminal background check plus must meet the BSA’s standards for membership and leadership.
