District Camporee

Scout Leaders

The Coyote Creek Camporee originally scheduled for 28-30 April 2017 has been moved to the fall due to unforeseen happenstance. It has been suggested jokingly that our ill-fate lies in some unintended slight of Kulcan, Tlaloc, Inti, or another of the countless pagan gods of the Mayincatec.

Our initial camporee site at Grant Ranch became unavailable due to unexpectedly heavy winter rains. The group campground there remain closed, probably until June. An extensive search led us to a replacement site, Camp Lindblad. That camp was abruptly sold by the Mt Diablo Silverado Council. It is now closed and all upcoming events at the camp have been cancelled.

At this late date, we have been unable to procure another site that is fitting for the camporee. Most camps are booked. The few remaining options would entail significant fee increases, extended travel, or crowding in with other large groups. Rather than compromise, we have decided it is best to postpone the camporee. The months of May and June are not feasible due to unavailable bookings, final exams (different weeks for different schools), and other conflicting events.

Therefore, the  camporee has been tentatively rescheduled for 22-24 September at Grant Ranch. That Friday falls on the autumnal equinox, so it befits out Mayincatec theme. Perhaps we shall witness the shadow of the feathered serpent slinking its way down the steps of El Castillo.

There is still some flexibility on the fall dates. Any comments regarding preferred or conflicting dates should be directed to me within the next week.

Units that have already registered are encouraged to leave their registration fees on deposit for the fall. There will be a slight fee increase for the Grant Ranch location. Units that have already paid as of the 1 April early-bird deadline (and remain paid) will be grandfathered at the current rate. However, if your unit or members of your unit cannot attend in the fall, you may request a full or partial refund from the council office.
